Ladyzhyn: from a Cossack fortress to a power-industry town

Near Ladyzhyn archaeologists found the Ladyzhyn-1 and Ladyzhyn-2 settlements of the Bug-Dniester culture. In the 16th century the town was a wooden fortress of the Bratslav Voivodeship ringed by a 30-metre earthen rampart, remains of which still stand in the centre. In 1674 a Cossack garrison under Colonel Murashko held out for over two weeks against the army of Sultan Mehmed IV, repelling 11 assaults. After the Ladyzhyn thermal power plant was commissioned in 1970–1971, Ladyzhyn became a town in 1973.

Notable people of Ladyzhyn

Ladyzhyn is the birthplace of Polish composer and pianist Albert Sowi?ski, sculptor Dmytro Shvarts, enzymologist and State Prize laureate Mykola Petrun and surgeon Anatolii Hudz (1936–2013). The town honours its native, Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier Serhii Maiboroda (1988–2014), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Ladyzhyn today

The town lies on the right bank of the Southern Bug where the Silnytsia joins it, 114 km from Vinnytsia. Landmarks include the remains of the fortress rampart, the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God (1904), the Church of the Assumption, the Taras Shevchenko monument and the Ladyzhyn Grove arboretum.
