Lanchyn: from first mention to today

Lanchyn is known from 1400, when it was named in a confirmation of estate privileges for the nobleman Mykola Turetskyi. According to Stepan Pushyk, it was named after Lanka (Ilona), daughter of King B?la I of Hungary and wife of Prince Rostyslav Volodymyrovych. Locals have produced salt since the Kyivan Rus era, and a salt works built in the mid-19th century operated until the Second World War. In the early 1740s Oleksa Dovbush's opryshky bands were active around Lanchyn.

Notable people of Lanchyn

Lanchyn is the birthplace of Metropolitan Mykhailo Levytskyi (1774–1858), the first cardinal of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and of writer and Sich Rifleman Yurii Shkrumeliak (1895–1965). Hero of Ukraine and Euromaidan participant Vasyl Sheremet was also born here. The town honours native Roman Kuzmyn (1986–2022), an ATO veteran and air assault soldier who was killed on combat duty.

Landmarks and local features

The settlement lies in the Carpathian foothills on the left bank of the Prut, with the small Krutizh waterfall on the river. Landmarks include the Church of the Archangel Michael (1922–1925), the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit (1998) and a bust of Yurii Shkrumeliak.
