Liubar — a settlement with chronicle history

Liubar's recorded history begins in 1150, when it is mentioned in the Hypatian Chronicle. From 1324 to 1386 the area belonged to the Lithuanian prince Liubartas (Dmytro Gediminovich), linked both to the name and to the castle built at that time on the Sluch. The modern name Liubar is first recorded in 1604, and it has been an urban-type settlement since 1924.

Famous people of Liubar

Locals honour Pavlo Mazurenko, a native of Liubar and participant of the Euromaidan, awarded the title Hero of Ukraine. Rock musician Viktor Kharchyshyn was also born here.

Landmarks and local character

Liubar is the centre of the Liubar settlement hromada in Zhytomyr district. Liubar lies on the Sluch River and keeps Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish heritage: the Church of Sts. Dominic and Michael (1752), the Basilian Monastery of St. George (1775) and the Holocaust memorial in the Pishchanskyi Forest. In the early 20th century local crafts included organ building and making candles, cloth and felt hats. Order a bouquet from anywhere in the world and we will deliver it in Liubar.
