Liubeshiv: from first record to today

Liubeshiv is first recorded in a document of the Lithuanian Metrica dated 18 September 1484, when the settlement belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1684 its owner, the Lithuanian marshal Jan Karol Dolski, founded a Piarist monastery here, and in 1693 obtained town status for the settlement under the name Novyi Dolsk. In 1756 the town passed to Jan Antoni Czarnecki, who brought in the Capuchins; their Church of St Francis of Assisi was consecrated in 1786. From 1940 Liubeshiv was a district centre.

Names linked to Liubeshiv

Tadeusz Ko?ciuszko (1746–1817), the Polish national hero, studied at the Piarist school in Liubeshiv, as did the botanist Stanis?aw Jundzi?? (1761–1847), later a professor at Vilnius University and founder of its botanical garden. Footballer Taras Mykhalyk (born 1983), who played for Dynamo Kyiv and the Ukrainian national team, was born here. Hero of Ukraine Eduard Hrynevych (1985–2014), a member of the Volyn self-defence company on the Maidan, studied at the local technical college and worked in Liubeshiv.

Landmarks and local character

The settlement lies on the left bank of the Stokhid River in Volhynian Polissia, 137 km from Lutsk, on the R14 road to the Dolsk border crossing with Belarus. Surviving landmarks include the Piarist monastery cells (1684) where Ko?ciuszko studied, the 18th-century entrance gate of the Czarnecki manor, and the Capuchin church and cells.
