Lokachi: A Little History
The first written mention of Lokachi dates from 1508. The town received Magdeburg rights in 1611 and held monthly markets in the early 17th century. The Czartoryski family built a castle on the marshes near the village of Kozliv, opposite Lokachi. In 1625 the town had the right to four fairs and counted 173 households. After the partitions of Poland it fell to the Russian Empire, and from 1921 to 1939 it belonged to Poland.

Lokachi is the birthplace of Valentyna Shtynko, an Honoured Journalist of Ukraine, and of Larysa Ivshyna, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Den.
Places Locals Know
The settlement stands on the Luha-Svynoryika River and its tributary Viinytsia, 56 km from Lutsk. Its landmark is the wooden Church of St Nicholas, built in 1911–1913 on the site of an older wooden church from 1609, and an 18th-century chapel also survives. After 1861 the town had two cloth factories and a brickworks, and households practised carpentry, blacksmithing and weaving.
