Liubotyn: a short history

The settlement of Liubotyn arose in the mid-1650s, when Cossack refugees from Right-Bank Ukraine settled on the Liubotynka River; it later became a company town of the Kharkiv Cossack Regiment. The town's history is closely tied to the railway: construction of the station began in 1871 and grew into a major junction with a repair base. In December 1905, during the revolution, an independent Liubotyn Republic was proclaimed here and lasted nine days. Liubotyn received town status in 1938.

Names linked to Liubotyn

Natalia Zabila (1903-1985), a Ukrainian children's writer and translator, lived and worked in Liubotyn. The blind kobzar Ostap Butenko lived here, and the poet Oleksa Marchenko, winner of the Oleksandr Oles Prize, was born in the village of Yalovenkove, now within the town.

Liubotyn today

The town lies 24 km west of Kharkiv on the Liubotynka and Merefa rivers. Its pride is a 260-metre pedestrian railway bridge, the longest covered one in Europe. Landmarks include Soborna Square, the Central Park beside the old early-19th-century Sviatopolk-Mirsky park, the church in Staryi Liubotyn (1811), St Nicholas Church in Hyivka (1820), the local history museum and the Olimpiiets stadium. The Liubivka forest park has the Partyzanka glade, a favourite local picnic spot. Our courier delivers flowers to any district of Liubotyn.
