Makariv in brief

Makariv is recorded from 1482 as the village of Voronyn, and a 10th–13th century hillfort nearby is linked by some historians with the chronicle town of Zdvyzhen. The present name comes from Makar Vasentsevych, who settled here and changed his surname to Makarovych; his grandson turned the manor into a fortress guarded by the Zdvyzh River. In 1694 the town was freed by Semen Palii's Cossacks, when the Makariv company of the Kyiv regiment was based here. On 2 March 2022 the 14th Mechanized Brigade and the 95th Air Assault Brigade liberated Makariv.

People of Makariv

Makariv's most famous native is Danylo Tuptalo (1651–1709), Saint Dmitry of Rostov, writer and author of the Lives of the Saints; his father Sava Tuptalo (1599–1703) was a Cossack captain. Reciter Anatolii Palamarenko (b. 1939), Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko and Hero of Ukraine Oleksii Potapenko (1978–2014) were also born here.

Makariv today

The town lies on the Zdvyzh River. Its central square has a culture house and a bust of Taras Shevchenko (2007), next to St Dmitry's Church with a monument to the saint; the Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands on the Horodyshche hill by the local history museum. Every July locals celebrate Kupala Night in the Panskyi Park by the river. A courier will bring your flowers to any part of Makariv.
