Malyn: from a Drevlian hillfort to banknote paper

Malyn traces its history to 891, and its name is linked to the Drevlian prince Mal. Remains of an Old Rus hillfort of the Drevlians, founded at the turn of the 9th century, survive in the south-east of the town. From about 1545 the Yelets noble family owned Malyn and the surrounding villages. A paper mill opened here in 1871, in 1873 the mother of explorer Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay bought the local estate, and Malyn became a town in 1938. Since 1996 it has been home to the National Bank of Ukraine's banknote paper mill, the only producer of paper for the hryvnia.

Famous names of Malyn

Explorer and anthropologist Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay visited his mother's estate here in 1886 and 1887. Malyn is the birthplace of Israeli sculptor Batia Lishansky (1899–1992), linguist Yurii Karpenko (1929), singer Vladyslav Horai (1967–2025) and boxer Anastasiia Kulinich (1996), a 2022 World Games champion.

Malyn today

The town stands on the Irsha River next to the Malyn Reservoir. Its oldest church is the late 18th-century Church of St Anne. A monument to Miklouho-Maclay (1986), the second in Ukraine after Sevastopol, stands in the centre, and a museum of the scientist operates in the family's former estate. The town park holds the Mound of Immortality, and asteroid 216451 Irsha is named after the town. We deliver bouquets to any address in Malyn — home, office or a festive table.
