Merefa: a little history

Merefa was founded in the late 16th century as a Cossack outpost against Tatar raids, and by the late 1650s it had a fortress with cast-iron cannons. Until 1765 it was a company town of the Kharkiv Regiment whose banner bore the image of St Peter. Koshovyi otaman Ivan Sirko lived here with his family for many years; in 1668 he founded a nearby farmstead, later called Artemivka, now part of the town. The railway arrived in 1867, glass and spirit works opened in Artemivka in the late 19th century, and Merefa became a town in 1938.

Notable people of Merefa

The most famous name linked with Merefa is Ivan Sirko (1610–1680), whose family estate stood in today's Artemivka. Natives include painter Porfyrii Zhalko-Tytarenko (1881–1949), physicist Viktor Katrych (b. 1944), a State Prize laureate, and choreographer Ihor Khramov (b. 1966). The town honours Lieutenant Colonel Yurii Pohorilyi (1976–2022), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Merefa today

Merefa lies where the Merefa River meets the Mzha, 10 km from Kharkiv, next to the Velykyi Bir forest. A bust of Ivan Sirko stands on the main square. Near the station is the quarter of "Belgian houses" built in 1911 for Belgian glassworkers, and School No. 1 (1914) is attributed to architect B. Korniienko; the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin dates from 1795. Glassmaking continues at the Merefa Glass Company. We deliver bouquets to any address in Merefa.
