Mizhhiria in brief

Mizhhiria has been known since 1415, when the settlement of Volove, or Volove Pole, was recorded among the estates of Hungarian lords. A village seal showing an ox with the inscription «Seal of the village of Volove» is known from the mid-19th century, and by the end of that century Volove was a district centre of M?ramaros County. It became an urban-type settlement on 30 May 1947 and was renamed Mizhhiria in 1953. In 2019 a two-tonne ox sculpture by Viacheslav Osavalchuk was installed at the entrance, a nod to the old name.

People linked to Mizhhiria

Poet and translator Petro Skunts (1942–2007), winner of the Shevchenko National Prize in 1997, was born here, as was writer and Carpatho-Ukraine figure Vasyl Grendzha-Donskyi (1897–1974). Historian Mykola Vehesh (born 1962), rector of Uzhhorod National University, is also a native. Czech writer Ivan Olbracht stayed in Volove many times, and a 500-year-old oak bears his name.

Landmarks and local highlights

The settlement lies in the Mizhhiria basin between the Borzhava range and the Gorgany, on the Rika River, 133 km from Uzhhorod, and is a well-known resort and tourist centre near the Synevyr Pass. Sights include the stone Church of St Michael the Archangel with a Baroque tower (begun 1801), the Church of Sts Peter and Paul (1935–1939) and the Olbracht Oak.
