Myronivka: from a Cossack farmstead to a wheat town

Myronivka dates back to the first half of the 17th century, when Cossack Myron Zelenyi from the Poltava region founded a farmstead here that gave the town its name. In July 1648 Bohdan Khmelnytskyi camped on the Rosava nearby, and on 24 February 1649 he held talks here with envoys of the Polish king. The 1876 railway from Fastiv made the village a grain and sugar trading centre. A breeding station founded in 1911 produced the famous Myronivska-264 wheat in 1957 and is now the Myronivka Institute of Wheat. Myronivka became a town in 1968.

People of Myronivka

Locals are proudest of wheat breeder Vasyl Remeslo, twice Hero of Socialist Labour and first director of the institute that bears his name. Cyclist Serhii Matvieiev (b. 1975), Sydney Olympic medallist, and academician Anatolii Danylenko are also connected with the town.

Myronivka today

The town lies in the Rosava valley, 106 km from Kyiv. A monument to founder Myron Zelenyi was unveiled in 2016; other landmarks include St Michael's Church, the Annunciation Church (2012), the local history museum on Sobornosti Street and the 1953 railway station.
