Monastyryshche, a town of Cossack valour

Monastyryshche is first documented in 1622: the town was founded in the early 17th century by the Zbarazky princes, and in 1635 it was owned by Prince Jeremi Wi?niowiecki. In 1648 Maksym Kryvonis's detachments drove the nobility out, and on 20–21 March 1653, near the town's fortifications, Ivan Bohun's 4,000 Cossacks defeated Stefan Czarniecki's 15,000-strong Polish army. A sugar mill was built here in 1897–1898. Monastyryshche became an urban-type settlement in 1957 and a town in 1985.

Notable people of Monastyryshche

Locals remember Ivan Kovalevskyi (1882–1955), a dramatic actor and singer and deputy director of Mykola Sadovskyi's theatre. Hero of the Soviet Union Rafail Milner (1910–1979) was born here. Native Volodymyr Veletniuk founded the esports organisation Monte, named after his home town.

Monastyryshche today

The town stands on the right bank of the Konela River, a tributary of the Hirskyi Tikych, 54 km from Uman. Its oldest building is the servants' house of the Tarnowski estate (1712–1720), and the district house of culture occupies a former Catholic church. Podoski Park, a landscape garden monument, the Alley of Old Lime Trees and the local history museum (1970) are worth a visit.
