A short history of Monastyryska

Monastyryska appears in documents of 1433 and 1437; the settlement was first called Pidhorodne, later Monastyryshche. By 1454 it was a town with Magdeburg rights and a castle at a crossing of the Black Way. In October 1629 registered Cossacks under Hryts'ko Chornyi, together with royal troops, defeated part of the Crimean horde near the town. From 1630 it belonged to the Potocki family, who rebuilt the castle as a palace; a cigarette and tobacco factory opened in 1797, and the Stanislaviv–Yarmolyntsi railway arrived in 1884.

Famous people of Monastyryska

Natives include writer and publisher Olena Kysilevska (1869–1956), stage actress Iryna Kossak (1882–1959), folk-art scholar Savyna Sydorovych (1895–1972), opera singer Roman Vitoshynskyi (1940–2019) and accordionist Ivan Lenyo (born 1971) of Haydamaky and Kozak System. Sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel worked here.

Landmarks and local highlights

The town stands on the Koropets River, a tributary of the Dniester. Highlights are the Church of the Dormition (1751, a former Catholic church with sculptures by Pinsel), the wooden Church of the Presentation (1873), the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross (1892), the Sviatohirskyi spiritual centre with the Botsiurkova spring, and the Taras Shevchenko monument (1993). Since 2001 the Bells of Lemkivshchyna festival has been held here every first weekend of August. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Monastyryska.
