A short history of Mostyska
Mostyska has been known since 1392, the date of its first written record. The name is linked to the bridges that still stand on all four sides of the town, which grew up on an old route from Western Europe to Rus. In 1404 it received Magdeburg rights, with a market square and town hall at the centre. In May 1441 a general assembly of the Red Ruthenian lands met here, and in the 17th century the town had 16 craft guilds. In 1861 a station opened on the first Galician railway, Lviv to Przemy?l.
Famous people of Mostyska
Inventor Jan Szczepanik (1872–1926), nicknamed the Polish Edison for his work in film, television and photography, was born in Rudnyky, now a suburb of Mostyska. Mezzo-soprano Irena Hrekh (born 1959), Honoured Artist of Ukraine, is a native of the town.
Mostyska today
The town lies on the Sichna River, 14 km from the Polish border, on the M11 road and the railway towards Krak?w. Sights include the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St John the Baptist Church (consecrated 1604), the Church of the Protection (1636), St Michael the Archangel Church (1900), the Strakhotskyi Palace in Rudnyky and the Mostyshchyna museum.
