A short history of Nadvirna

Nadvirna is known from 1589, when its founder M. Kuropatwa mentioned the settlement in a court protest. The town received Magdeburg rights in 1591 and a location charter in 1601, and in 1599 the Kuropatwa family built the Church of the Assumption here. In the 17th–18th centuries Nadvirna grew into a centre of crafts and trade, from furriers and tanners to tailors and coopers, and in 1745–1787 it belonged to Count I. Cetner. After the Maniava Skete closed in 1785, its Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was moved to Nadvirna. The railway arrived in 1894, and an oil refinery founded around 1900 became today's Naftokhimik Prykarpattia.

Natives of Nadvirna include botanist and palaeobotanist Jadwiga Wo?oszy?ska (1882–1951), choral conductor and composer Yevhen Vakhniak (1912–1998), People's Artist of Ukraine, bandurist and tenor Volodymyr Lutsiv (1929–2019), judoka Roman Hontiuk (1984) and triple jumper Viktor Yastrebov (1982), a European Championship silver medallist.

Landmarks and local highlights

Nadvirna lies on the right bank of the Bystrytsia Nadvirnianska in the Carpathian foothills, divided by the Strymba River; from the top of Horodyshche Hill the whole town is visible. The ruins of Krasnodvir Castle survive in the town park, and Pniv Castle is close by. Other sights include the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross from the Maniava Skete, the Church of the Assumption, the town hall, the 1848 cross marking the end of serfdom and the monument to 100 years of Nadvirna oil.
