What to Know About Narodychi

Narodychi is known from 1545, in the inventories of Ovruch Castle, as the property of Fedir Yelets. In the 1630s the Potocki family built a castle here, which was burned in 1651. The settlement is mentioned as a town on 16 June 1683. In 1748 the Kyiv standard-bearer Micha? Pawsza built a wooden church and gave it to the Discalced Carmelites. From 1793 it belonged to Ovruch county, and from 1923–1924 it was a district centre. After the 1986 Chornobyl disaster it was placed in the mandatory resettlement zone.

Notable People

The Polish writer Lev Kaltenberg (1910–1989) lived in Narodychi from 1912 to 1918 and described it in his books. Philosopher and academician Myroslav Popovych lived here from 1946 and finished school in the settlement. Archaeologist Ivan Levytskyi (1896–1952) studied the multi-layer Narodychi archaeological site and the historic part of the settlement.

Narodychi Today

The settlement stands where the Uzh and Zherev rivers meet, in the Kyiv Polissia region.
