Nemyriv: from a Scythian hillfort to the Shcherbatov Palace

Nemyriv was first mentioned in writing in 1506, though the far older Nemyriv hillfort of the 7th–6th centuries BC, covering 150 ha with ramparts 5.5 km long, lies 3 km from the town. In 1677–1679 Nemyriv served as the capital of Yurii Khmelnytskyi under Ottoman protection, and in 1737 it hosted a congress of the Austrian, Russian and Ottoman monarchies. Wincenty Potocki founded factories, a school, a library, a palace and, in 1787, a park here. Nemyriv received town status on 28 August 1985.

Names linked to Nemyriv

Nemyriv is the birthplace of Russian poet Nikolai Nekrasov (1821–1878), biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900–1975), a founder of American population genetics, and painter Mykola Chulko (1947–2014). Writer Marko Vovchok lived here in 1856–1858, and Taras Shevchenko's friend, artist Ivan Soshenko, taught drawing at the local gymnasium. The town honours its native, sergeant Denys Boltian (1995–2022), who died defending Ukraine.

Landmarks and local highlights

Nemyriv stands on the Ustia River on the M30 highway. Highlights include the Shcherbatov Palace with its park by architect Ji?? Stibral, an 85-hectare arboretum, St Joseph's Church (1806), the Holy Trinity Monastery with its Trinity Church (1881) and the boys' gymnasium building (1838). There are memorial museums of Nekrasov and Marko Vovchok, and the Avanhard sanatorium in the palace uses its own radon water.
