Nizhyn: a town with chronicle history

Under 1147 the chronicle mentions Unenizh, a fortified outpost of the Chernihiv principality, while a record of Nizhyn by its own name dates to 1385. On 26 March 1625 the town received Magdeburg rights. In 1648 the Nizhyn Cossack Regiment was formed, and Greek merchants founded their colony here in 1675. The Bezborodko Gymnasium of Higher Sciences opened in 1805; Mykola Gogol, Yevhen Hrebinka and Leonid Hlibov studied there. Nizhyn was liberated from German occupation on 15 September 1943.

Famous people of Nizhyn

Navigator Yurii Lisianskyi (1773–1836) and singer and actor Mark Bernes (1911–1969) were born here. The great Ukrainian actress Maria Zankovetska lived and worked in Nizhyn, and in 1881 the town opened the first monument to Gogol in the Russian Empire.

Nizhyn today

The town stands on the Oster River, 80 km from Chernihiv. Highlights include St Nicholas Cathedral (1654), the Annunciation Cathedral (1702–1716), the Greek churches of St Michael (1719–1729) and All Saints (1786), and the Ivan Spaskyi Local History Museum.
