Novoukrainka: a brief history

Novoukrainka dates from 1769, when the Pavlovsk redoubt, headquarters of the Moldavian Hussar Regiment, was built where the Pomichna and Hruzka flow into the Chornyi Tashlyk. Academician Johann G?ldenst?dt, passing through in 1774, recorded that the settlement had been founded in 1769. Its early names — Pavlove, Pavlivsk, Novopavlivsk — honour the Apostle Paul. In 1821 the 1st Ukrainian Uhlan Regiment was stationed here, and in 1832 the town was renamed Novoukrainka. The Odesa–Kremenchuk railway reached it in 1869, and during the 1877–1878 war a field hospital here was inspected by Nikolai Pirogov. Novoukrainka became a city in 1938.

Notable people of Novoukrainka

Actor, director, playwright and translator Fedir Levytskyi (1858–1933) and lyric-dramatic soprano Raisa Serhiienko (1925–1987) were both born in Novoukrainka.
