Novovorontsovka: from Cossack winter camps to a settlement on the Dnipro

Before the Zaporozhian Sich was abolished in 1775, Cossack winter camps stood here. In the late 18th century the village of Mykolaivka appeared by the Velyki Vody backwater of the Dnipro; its founding is dated to 1795. In 1821 Count Mikhail Vorontsov bought it, resettled serfs from his other estates and renamed it Novovorontsovka. A stone St Nicholas Church was built in 1829, and by 1886 the town had 1,494 residents, 16 shops, a machine works and five fairs a year, shipping grain via the Mali Hyrly pier to Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa. A district centre from 1935, it became an urban-type settlement in 1956 and now heads a hromada in Beryslav Raion.

Notable people of Novovorontsovka

Film editor, screenwriter and director Tamara Shaporenko (1930–1982), who worked at the Dovzhenko Film Studio, Ukrtelefilm and Kyivnaukfilm, was born here, as was journalist, TV presenter and volunteer Hanna Boka (born 1987). Hero of the Soviet Union Mykhailo Karnaushenko (1906–1975), a WWII battalion commander, lived and is buried here; a local street bears his name.

Landmarks and local highlights

The settlement lies in northern Kherson Oblast on the shore of the former Kakhovka Reservoir, near the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast border. The Vorontsov estate keeps the steward's house, now the local history museum, outbuildings and part of its park; nearby stands the Catherine Mile post, and the town has St Nicholas the Wonderworker Church and a 2008 memorial to victims of the Holodomor and political repression. On land freed from the water, researchers found a Late Bronze Age burial ground and a Late Scythian settlement, and in 1890 American traveller Thomas Stevens described the town in Through Russia on a Mustang.
