Obukhiv: a little history

Obukhiv traces its history to the settlement of Lukavytsia, mentioned in 1362, when Volodymyr Olherdovych took the Kyiv throne. The present name dates from the 16th century, when the only resident of the deserted farmstead on the Lukavytsia was a peasant called Obukh; in 1588 the estate was bought by Janusz Ostrogski. In 1649 Obukhiv became a Cossack company town of the Kyiv Regiment and in 1834 a fair town. Prince Oleksandr Gorchakov built a palace and a distillery here, and in the early 20th century Obukhiv was the pottery capital of Kyiv county. It became a town in 1979.

Notable people of Obukhiv

Poet Andrii Malyshko (1912–1970), author of "The Song of the Rushnyk", was born here, and his homestead is now a memorial museum. Honorary citizens include Olympic canoeing medallist Tetiana Semykina (born 1973) and Hero of Ukraine Volodymyr Chaplinskyi, a worker of the Kyiv cardboard and paper mill and one of the Heavenly Hundred.
