Ochakiv: a Fortress Town on the Estuary

Ochakiv is known from 1431, when a treaty mentioned the Lithuanian Dashiv castle near the mouth of the Dnipro, built in 1415 under Grand Duke Vytautas. Probably in 1492 the Crimean khan Mengli Giray founded the fortress of Kara-Kermen on its site; the Ottomans called it Achi-Kale, which gave the town its name. In 1669 Zaporozhian Cossacks led by Ivan Sirko destroyed the fortress and freed 7,000 captives. It was taken by storm on 6 December 1788, and the town was laid out on the site in 1792. Ochakiv has had town status since 1938.

Notable People of Ochakiv

Ochakiv is the birthplace of the marine painter Rufin Sudkovsky (1850–1885), the painter Ambrosii Zhdakha (1855–1927) and the human rights activist Leonid Tymchuk (b. 1935). It is also the hometown of the pilot Pavlo Ivanov, who was posthumously named Hero of Ukraine in 2025.
