Olevsk: from first record to today

Olevsk appears in documents from 1488, and archaeologists date its Old Rus hillfort, Babyna Hora, to the 9th–11th centuries. From the 16th century the town belonged to the Nemyrych family. St Nicholas Church was built in 1596, and in 1641 King W?adys?aw IV Vasa granted Olevsk Magdeburg rights with a weekly market and two fairs a year. The Kyiv–Kovel railway of 1903 spurred growth, and Olevsk became a town in 2003.

Notable people

Olevsk is linked with stage and film actress Liusiena Ovchynnykova (1931–1999) and urologist-oncologist Professor Eduard Stakhovskyi (1965). Locals honour Senior Sergeant Mykola Haichenia (1978–2015), a defender of Ukraine named an honorary citizen of Olevsk posthumously.

The town lies in Zhytomyr Polissia on the Ubort River. Its landmark is St Nicholas Church (1596), an architectural monument of national importance; nearby are the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a memorial sign to the Magdeburg rights, the local history museum and the open-air museum Drevlianskyi Hrad.
