Orativ: from the first mention to today
Orativ has been known since 1448, when, according to the records of the Vilnius Sejm, King Casimir IV granted it to a nobleman. In 1562–1589 the fortified town suffered Crimean Tatar raids, and in 1648 it was heavily destroyed. From 1672 to 1699 it was the north-easternmost point of Podillia under Ottoman rule. It became a town in 1811 and is now an urban-type settlement.

Landmarks and local features
The settlement stands on the Zhyva River, 90 km from Vinnytsia. Its main sights are the Church of St Stanislaus (1845), where the parents of the writer Joseph Conrad are recorded as having married, the Voronovich Palace (1892), built for General Mikhail Voronovich and rebuilt in the 1950s as a children's home, and the local history museum.
