Pokrov in brief

Pokrov grew on manganese: in 1883 geologist Valerian Domher discovered rich manganese ore deposits in the Solona River basin, and mining at the Pokrov pits began in 1886. In 1956 the miners' settlements and the village of Oleksandrivka merged into the town of Ordzhonikidze. In 1971 archaeologist Borys Mozolevskyi excavated the nearby Scythian burial mound Tovsta Mohyla (4th century BC) and found the famous golden pectoral. By a Verkhovna Rada resolution of 17 March 2016 the town was renamed Pokrov, effective 2 April 2016.

Names linked to Pokrov

Natives include footballer and coach Oleh Taran (born 1960), USSR champion in 1983. The central park bears the name of archaeologist and poet Borys Mozolevskyi (1936–1993), discoverer of the Scythian pectoral. The town also honours Senior Soldier Oleh Kravchenko (1977–2016), who was killed defending Ukraine in Donetsk Oblast.

Landmarks and local highlights

The town lies in the basin of the Bazavluk and Solona rivers. Its centre features Borys Mozolevskyi Park, the monument to Cossack otaman Ivan Sirko, the Taras Shevchenko monument, the M. A. Zanudko Museum of Local History (1967) and the Alley of Glory. The main employer is the Pokrov Mining and Processing Plant, and Pokrov Solar Power Plant is among Ukraine's largest. Ivan Sirko's grave near Kapulivka and the site of the last Zaporozhian Sich are nearby. We deliver bouquets to any address in Pokrov.
