What to know about Pisochyn

Pisochyn was first mentioned in 1681; its name comes from the sandy banks of the Udy and the small Pisochna River, a tributary that has now almost dried up. In 1779 it was a military sloboda, and by 1864 the state village had 280 households and 802 residents, a church and a tavern. The stone Church of St. Basil was built in 1823–1828 to a design by provincial architect Stepan Chernyshov, and in 1871 the Kharkiv Society for the Spread of Literacy opened one of the first free public libraries in Eastern Ukraine here.

Natives include physicist Vitalii Kononenko (born 1937), Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and professor, and Mykhailo Yedynovych (1881 – ?), a Ukrainian community leader in Manchuria in 1917–1945.

Pisochyn stretches along the Udy River and the Poltava Highway and has merged with Nova Bavaria and Podvirky, forming Kharkiv's western suburb; it is the largest settlement in Kharkiv Raion after Kharkiv itself. Landmarks include the Empire-style Church of St. Basil with a gilded angel on its bell tower spire, a Scythian necropolis, the Hai sanatorium and a memorial to local soldiers.
