Petrykivka: the village made famous by its painting

The first document about Petrykivka dates from 20 February 1772, when Kosh Otaman Petro Kalnyshevsky asked the Metropolitan of Kyiv to bless a church in the settlement on the Chaplynka River. It was settled by residents of the flood-prone Kurylivka, and the Church of St George was founded in 1773 and consecrated in 1775. After the Zaporozhian Sich was destroyed, Petrykivka never knew serfdom. By 1897 it had more than 21,000 residents.
