Piatykhatky: from five houses to a railway hub

Piatykhatky dates from 1886, when construction of a junction station began in Saksahan volost of Verkhniodniprovsk county. The first five houses built beside it gave both the town and the station their name. The land remembers earlier events too: the Battle of Zhovti Vody began on the northern outskirts of today's Piatykhatky in the spring of 1648. The settlement became a district centre in 1923, received town status in 1938 and was liberated on 19 October 1943.
