Pidhaitsi: from the first mention to today

The first documentary mention of Pidhaitsi dates from 1436, when a certain Elzbieta of Pidhaitsi, wife of Michal Buczacki, is recorded. Around 1463 Jakub Buczacki built a castle on an island by the dam across the Koropets, and in 1469 he founded a new town under Magdeburg law. Moldavian armies devastated the town in 1498 and 1509, and a fire destroyed it in 1621, yet it was rebuilt in stone. Its heyday came after 1641 under Stanislaw "Rewera" Potocki, when the castle was restored and a cross-shaped town hall was built on the Market Square. In October 1667 Jan Sobieski's troops faced the Cossack-Tatar army of Petro Doroshenko near Pidhaitsi.

Names linked to Pidhaitsi

Leonard Rettel (1811-1885), poet, translator and the first Polish Hispanist, was born here, as was Arthur Murray (1895-1991), founder of the worldwide Arthur Murray Studios dance chain. Jerzy Chor?bski (1902-1986), called the "father of Polish neurosurgery", was also a native. The brothers Tadeusz (1927-1992) and Jan (1929-2002) Lomnicki, a Polish actor and a film director, were born and raised on Lysenko Street.

Pidhaitsi today

The town stands on the right bank of the Koropets River. Key sights are the fortified Church of the Dormition (1650-1653), Holy Trinity Church (1634), the synagogue of around 1627, Marcelina Czartoryska's "House with Lions" and the town hall of 1886-1927. The market square has a rare triangular shape, and the Okopysko Jewish cemetery is among the largest and best preserved in Ukraine. Our courier delivers flowers to any part of Pidhaitsi.
