Polonne — a town with chronicle history

Polonne is known from 996, when Prince Volodymyr Sviatoslavych assigned it to the Church of the Tithes in Kyiv. In 1169 the Cumans raided its surroundings but failed to take the fortress, and in 1195 Riuryk Rostyslavych handed the town to Roman Mstyslavych. In 1494 it passed to Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi, who built a new fortress in 1510. In 1640 Stanis?aw Lubomirski surrounded the centre with a pentagonal bastion rampart designed by Italian architect Matteo Trapola. From 1648 Polonne was a company town of the Volhynian Regiment, and in 2021 Ukraine officially marked 1,025 years since its first mention.

Notable people of Polonne

Polonne is the birthplace of sculptor Leo Mol (1915–2009), member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, poet Peretz Markish (1895–1952) and opera bass Lev Sibiriakov (1870–1938). Hasidic master Yaakov Yosef of Polonne (1710–1784), a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov, lived here, and Lesya Ukrainka stayed in town in 1893. Lyceum No. 7 bears the name of National Guard soldier Myroslav Slyvka (1990–2018), who was killed defending Ukraine.

Polonne today

The town lies on the Khomora River where Polissia meets the forest-steppe. Sights include the earthen rampart of the medieval hillfort, St Anne's Church (1607), the Church of the Holy Protection (1720), the Trinity Church rebuilt in 2019 and the 19th-century Polonne Park. The town is known for porcelain and has a Polonne Porcelain Museum (2013); in 2021 a unique Old Rus lead letter was found here. We deliver bouquets to any address in Polonne.
