Popilnia in brief
The neighbouring village arose in the early 17th century, while the settlement itself grew around the railway station opened in 1870. In 1702–1704 local residents joined Semen Palii's uprising. Popilnia was liberated from Nazi occupation on 26 December 1943.

Popilnia, with about 5,300 residents, is the centre of the Popilnia settlement hromada in Zhytomyr district. The Lozynka River rises nearby and flows through Popilnia to the Unava. Memorable places include St. Nicholas Church (1975), the Holodomor memorial (2008), the monument to the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred (2016), the bust of Taras Shevchenko (2011) and the sculpture "To the Defenders of the Homeland" (2021).
