What to know about Putyla

Putyla is known since 1501, when it was listed among the settlements granted to the Moldavian grand logothete Ion T?utu. Its old names were Putyliv and Storonets-Putyliv, and the word putyla is linked to the meaning of path or current. In 1817 local peasants complained to Emperor Francis II that taxes had risen tenfold in ten years, and in 1843 a ban on using the forest sparked unrest led in part by Lukian Kobylytsia. On 20 September 1885 a new wooden church of St. Nicholas was consecrated here.

Famous people of Putyla

The best-known native is the Romantic writer Yurii Fedkovych (1834–1888), a forerunner of the national revival of Bukovyna. Putyla is also the birthplace of the artist and poet Liubov Revutska (1953–1994), the Israeli poet and sculptor Manfred Winkler (1922–2014) and the historian and ethnographer Mykhailo Chuchko (born 1972).

Putyla today

The settlement lies on the Putylka River in the Hutsul region of the Ukrainian Carpathians, at about 628 metres above sea level. Fedkovych is remembered at his house-museum, a branch of the Chernivtsi Literary Museum, and at his monument. Local churches include the wooden St. Nicholas Church (1885) and the Holy Spirit Church consecrated in 2015. In 2013 Putyla hosted the 21st International Hutsul Festival.
