A brief history of Reni

Reni was first mentioned in writing in 1548, though archaeological finds here date back to the 4th century BC. In the 10th–12th centuries the area belonged to Kyivan Rus, later to the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia and Moldavia. Under Ottoman rule the town was called Tomarovo. From 1821 to 1862 it belonged to Moldavia, then to Romania, from 1877 to the Russian Empire and again to Romania in 1918–1940. In Soviet times its seaport became a major transport hub, and in 2000 parliament created the Reni Special Economic Zone.

Notable people of Reni

Reni is the birthplace of classical historian Professor Aristid Dovatur. Yiddish poet Yosl Lerner, singer and violinist Rudolf Kaplanskyi of the Bucuria jazz orchestra and inventor Vitalii Ohorodnikov are also linked with the town.

The town stands on the left bank of the Danube, 3 km from the mouth of the Prut, about 310 km from Odesa — the farthest town from the regional centre. It has a seaport, a railway station and the Reni–Giurgiule?ti border crossing with Moldova. Sights include the Holy Ascension Cathedral, the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen, the local history museum and the memorial on Freedom Square; asteroid 1792 Reni is named after the town.
