Reshetylivka — a town with Cossack history

Reshetylivka is first documented on 1 May 1638, and in 1648 Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan marked it on his map of Ukraine. Once owned by Stanis?aw Koniecpolski, it later became a company town of the Poltava Regiment with a wooden fortress above the Hovtva. In July 1709 an army camp stood here and the so-called Reshetylivka Articles were issued. In 1729 Hetman Danylo Apostol granted the town to Poltava colonel Vasyl Kochubei. Taras Shevchenko visited in 1845 and sketched it for Picturesque Ukraine; Reshetylivka received town status in 2017.

Notable people of Reshetylivka

Natives include Metropolitan of Kyiv Arsenii Mohylianskyi (1704–1770), who funded the Church of the Dormition, bandurist Lesia Barvinok (1908–2002), writer Dmytro Derech (1914–2007) and long jumper Marharyta Tverdokhlib (born 1991).

Reshetylivka today

The town stands on the Hovtva, 38 km from Poltava, and is the home of white-on-white embroidery and a renowned weaving and carpet-making centre; four local masters received the Shevchenko Prize in 1986.
