A short history of Romaniv

Romaniv is first recorded in the 15th-century Lithuanian Metrica, and 1471 is taken as its founding year. In 1505 King Alexander Jagiellon granted the village to Dmytro Oleksandrovych, governor of Zhytomyr district, and from the late 16th century Romaniv belonged to the Ostrozky princes. In 1817 it received Magdeburg rights, and the same year a Jesuit college officially opened on the estate of senator J?zef August Ili?ski, operating until 1820. In the 1820s a horn orchestra led by Sila Karelin played on the Ili?ski estate. In 1903 owner Henryk Stecki founded a glassworks. From 1933 to 2003 the settlement was called Dzerzhynsk; its historic name returned on 9 July 2003.

Romaniv is associated with composer and poet Jan Stanis?aw Ili?ski, composer Feliks Dobrzy?ski, a graduate of the local college, Shevchenko scholar and poet Volodymyr Yatsiuk, and prose writer and translator Kazimierz Truchanowski. College graduates also included writer Micha? Grabowski and linguist Kalikst Koz?owski. A street in Romaniv bears the name of Sergeant Serhii Lialevych (1981–2015), who fell in the battle for Debaltseve.

Romaniv today

The Lisna River, a tributary of the Teteriv, flows through the settlement, 67 km by road from Zhytomyr. The central square is the heart of Romaniv, and the 1903 glassworks buildings with their furnace hall recall the town's glassmaking past.
