Romny: a little history
Romny, then called Romen, is first mentioned in Volodymyr Monomakh's «Instruction» under the year 1096. In the Cossack era it was a company centre of the Myrhorod Regiment and, from 1658, of the Lubny Regiment. The town's Illinskyi Fair was the third most important in the Russian Empire, and in 1918 a Taras Shevchenko monument by Ivan Kavaleridze was unveiled here.

Physicist Abram Ioffe (1880–1960), one of the founders of solid-state physics, was born in Romny. Sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze (1887–1978) created the town's Shevchenko monument.
