Rozhyshche: from the first record to today

Rozhyshche is first recorded in 1322, when Prince Liubart Gediminovich of Lutsk granted it to the cathedral church of St John the Theologian. In 1567 King Sigismund Augustus gave the town Magdeburg rights. In the 1830s German colonists founded cloth mills nearby, and twenty were operating in the 19th century. In 1873 one of Volhynia's first railways passed through, and Rozhyshche received town status in 1989.

The town stands on the Styr River and has a multinational past shared by Ukrainians, Poles, Jews and Germans; it is remembered as Volhynia's historic cloth-making centre.
