Rzhyshchiv: from Ivan-horod to the present

Rzhyshchiv dates back to 1151, when the Hypatian Chronicle, describing the struggle between Iziaslav Mstyslavych and Yurii Dolgorukiy for Kyiv, mentions Ivan-horod, a fortress on a hill above the Dnipro next to the settlement of Vzhyshchev. In 1506 King Sigismund I granted the town Magdeburg rights. In December 1653 Bohdan Khmelnytskyi's council held a preliminary meeting here with the Moscow embassy of boyar Buturlin. By the mid-19th century the Rzhyshchiv river pier was one of the leading transhipment trade bases on the Dnipro. In 1995 Rzhyshchiv became a town of regional significance.

Notable people of Rzhyshchiv

Rzhyshchiv is the birthplace of poet Lina Kostenko (born 1930), winner of the Shevchenko Prize, mathematician Mykola Buslenko (1922–1977), People's Artist Vasyl Konopatskyi (1918–2007) and painter Oleksii Horbenko (1919–2010). The town also honours Senior Sergeant Yurii Hladchenko (1979–2014) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Rzhyshchiv today

The town sits at the mouth of the Lehlych River on the right bank of the Kaniv Reservoir, 76 km from Kyiv. Highlights include the Holy Trinity Church (1853–1860), the Transfiguration Monastery, the hillfort on Ivan-Hora and the Trypillia Culture Park; the Trypillia Circle festival has been held here since 2008.
