Sarata: from Pastor Lindl's colony to today

Sarata's story begins in 1822, when Pastor Ignaz Lindl brought his congregation here: 50 wagons of settlers arrived on 1 April, followed by Catholic families from Bavaria and Lutherans from W?rttemberg. The colonists built a school in 1823 and in 1840 a church of Evangelical Christians with 515 seats, the only church in Bessarabia with an organ. In 1844 colonist K. F. Werner funded the first teachers' college in Bessarabia. By the early 20th century Sarata was a market town and volost centre of Akkerman County, and it became an urban-type settlement in 1957.

Notable people of Sarata

The settlement was founded by Pastor Ignaz Lindl, with clockmaker and bandmaster Alois Schertzinger (1787–1864) among its co-founders. Sarata is also linked to Christian Fie? (1910–2001), founder of the Bessarabian German heritage museum in Stuttgart, German jurist and criminologist Heinz Sch?ch (b. 1940) and Dynamo Kyiv forward Vladyslav Supriaha (b. 2000). Locals honour border guard Dmytro Syrbu (1994–2014), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Landmarks and local character

Sarata lies on the Sarata River, off the M15 highway towards Odesa. Its landmarks include the monument to founder Ignaz Lindl, the Taras Shevchenko monument, the Baptist church in the former Lutheran church building, the Holy Protection Church, the local history museum, a well dug by Lindl himself and the Mound of Glory by the Odesa road. Every 1 October the town holds its Church Day parade in honour of the founder. We deliver bouquets to any address in Sarata.
