Sarny: a little history

Sarny is known from 1648, but the railway truly shaped the town. In 1885 a small halt called Sarny was built where the Rivne–Luninets and Kovel–Korosten lines cross, and in 1902 the Kyiv–Sarny–Kovel line was laid, bringing a locomotive depot and a carriage works. On 19 February 1918 trains carrying institutions of the Ukrainian Central Rada arrived, and Sarny briefly hosted the central bodies of the Ukrainian People's Republic. It first became a town in June 1917, lost the status in 1920 and has held it permanently since 1939.

Notable people of Sarny

Polish economist and political scientist Czes?aw Bobrowski (1904–1996) was born in Sarny. The town is also linked with opera singer and bandurist Natalia Kovalova (1976), an Operalia prize winner. Residents honour Junior Sergeant Andrii Kolodiaznyi (1997–2024) of the 81st Airmobile Brigade, born here and posthumously named Hero of Ukraine.

Sarny today

Sarny lies on the Sluch River, 90 km north of Rivne, and remains a railway junction with an international crossing to Luninets. Called the pearl of Western Polissia, it is home to the Holy Trinity Church (1725), which has kept its almost original look, the Church of the Transfiguration, the Holy Protection Cathedral, Railwaymen's Park and the Rozvylka protected forest. Our courier will deliver flowers to any part of Sarny.
