Snovsk: a short history

Snovsk grew in the 1860s from Korzhivka, a workers' settlement founded during construction of the Libava–Romny railway. On 7 March 1923 it became the centre of Snovsk district and of Snovsk okruha, which covered 11 districts until August 1925, and it received town status in 1924. In the 1920s the locomotive depot and railway station employed a third of the adult population. From 1935 to 2016 the town was called Shchors; in 2016 it regained its historic name, and the Snovsk municipal community was formed the same year. Snovsk was liberated from Russian occupation on 28 March 2022.

Notable natives of Snovsk

Natives include conductor Natan Rakhlin (1906–1979), chemist Ivan Adadurov, journalist and TV presenter Ihor Slisarenko, and Colonel Dmytro Bryzhynskyi of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who led the defence of Chernihiv in February–March 2022 and kept the city from capture.
