A short history of Shyroke

Shyroke grew out of an 18th-century Zaporozhian winter camp in the Inhul palanka of the New Sich; 1787 is considered its founding year. Its first wooden Intercession Church was consecrated in 1792 and replaced by a stone one in 1833. By 1886 Shyroke was a market town and volost centre in Kherson county, with 4,976 residents, a church, a school, a pharmacy, nine shops, four annual fairs and Sunday markets. Older traces go back to the Trypillia culture: an anthropomorphic figurine was found in a burial mound on the Inhulets in 1966.

Notable people of Shyroke

Shyroke is the birthplace of church historian and public figure Vasyl Bidnov (1874–1935), a member of the Ukrainian Central Rada; stage and film actress Nadiia Dotsenko (1914–1994), People's Artist of the USSR; composer and teacher Vitalii Kyreiko (1926–2016); and writer Pavlo Temchenko, born in 1882.
