What to know about Shyriaieve

Shyriaieve appeared in the late 18th century as Stepanivka, founded by settlers from Bulgaria and runaway peasants; the 1795 census counted 36 households and 289 residents. The Chumak trade route from Odesa to Podillia, Volhynia and Balta ran through the village, encouraging trade and crafts, and in the first half of the 19th century Stepanivka became a market town with large weekly fairs. Its first major landowner was Anastasiia Chornolutska, daughter of court servant Stepan Shyriai; after her death in 1880 her son Serhii Shyriai inherited the estate and renamed Stepanivka as Shyriaieve. On 17 February 1935 the settlement became a district centre.
