Shostka traces its history to the 1670s, when Stepan Buhai, a Cossack of the Voronizh company, built several mills on the Shostka River, the first in 1676 under a decree of Hetman Ivan Samoilovych. By Hetman Ivan Mazepa's decree of 10 November 1701 the Voronizh town hall bought another mill here, and in 1739 it was handed over to build a gunpowder works that shaped the town's future. In 1812 local workers supplied the army with 24,536 poods of gunpowder, and in 1848 a primer factory, later known as Impuls, opened. Shostka received town status in 1924, and in 1931 construction began on the film factory that grew into Svema.
Historian and folklorist Mykhailo Maksymovych (1804–1873), the first rector of Kyiv University, spent his childhood here. Fighter ace Ivan Kozhedub (1920–1991), three-time Hero of the Soviet Union, studied and lived in Shostka. Natives include biathlete Olena Zubrylova (b. 1973), three-time world champion, volleyball player Oleksandr Sorokalet (b. 1959), Olympic silver medallist, and Leonid Shyman (b. 1959), chief designer of solid-fuel rocket engines and Hero of Ukraine.
The town lies on the Shostka River in the Siverian land, 209 km north of Sumy, bordered by pine and oak forest. Landmarks include St. Volodymyr's Church, one of the few brick chapels in Sumy region, the Church of the Nativity, St. Nicholas Church, Svobody Park, the Svema Palace of Culture and the local history museum. Known as the chemists' town, Shostka was home to Svema, which made cine, photo and magnetic film. Our courier will deliver flowers to any district of Shostka.
