Synelnykove: a town that grew around a station

Synelnykove owes its existence to the railway: in 1868–1869 a station was built on the lands of Major General Ivan Synelnykov and named after him. From 1873 it became a junction of the Kateryninska and Lozova–Sevastopol lines, and the Synelnykove I and Synelnykove II stations opened. A locomotive depot and carriage workshops followed in 1895 and St Nicholas Church in 1899, when the settlement already had over 2,900 residents. Synelnykove became a town and county seat in 1921, a district centre in 1923, and gained a porcelain factory in 1961–1964.

Notable people of Synelnykove

Locals are proud of People's Artist Yevheniia Zolotova (1928–2020), long-time director at the Olha Kobylianska Music and Drama Theatre in Chernivtsi. Physicist and essayist Oleksandr Borhardt (1919–2002), legal scholar Olimpiad Ioffe (1920–2005) and orthopaedic surgeon Andrii Babko (1971) were born here.

Synelnykove today

The town stands on the Vorona River, 48 km south-east of Dnipro, and remains a major rail junction where the Kryvbas–Donbas and Kharkiv–Simferopol lines cross. Its railway heritage lives on in the early 20th-century Synelnykove I station, the 1899 railway school and church building and a monument to the Eu 686-20 steam locomotive. Other landmarks include the Glory Monument in the park of the same name and the Church of St Ephrem the Syrian. Today local food plants produce snacks, seeds and nuts.
