Skole: from its first record to today

Skole was first recorded on 5 March 1397, when the brothers Myko and Ivanko Volokh received permission from King W?adys?aw II to develop a settlement on the Opir River. In 1567 it passed to Prince Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski, and around 1660 Aleksander Janusz Zas?awski built stone fortifications and a wooden castle here, giving the settlement the character of a town. In 1864 Count Ki?ski founded the largest match factory in Galicia in Skole, and on 4 April 1885 the first passenger train arrived from Stryi. Skole became a county seat in 1912.

Notable people of Skole

Skole is the birthplace of Polish politician and lawyer Stanis?aw G??bi?ski (1862–1941), rector of Lviv University in 1908–1909, poet Beata Oberty?ska (1898–1980) and Viktor Vynnyk, frontman of the rock band MERI. In 1908 Yevhen Petrushevych, later president of the West Ukrainian People's Republic, moved his law office here and became the town's mayor. Hero of Ukraine Oleh Ushnevych (1982–2014), one of the Heavenly Hundred, lived and is buried in Skole.

Landmarks and local highlights

The town lies in the Opir valley in the Skole Beskids, a historic centre of the Boyko region, next to Skole Beskids National Park. Its treasure is the wooden Church of St Panteleimon (16th century) with a 17th-century bell tower; other sights include the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos and the Church of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows (both 1895), the Gredl Palace in Demnia and the Skolivshchyna museum.
