Flowers in Smila delivered to a home or office: roses, hydrangeas, flower boxes and bouquets for any occasion. The greeting card is free.
Smila's official birth year is 1542, when the settlement of Yatskove-Tiasmyno appeared in documents of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The name Smila dates from the early 17th century; a legend recorded by Count Bobrynskyi links it to a brave girl who led warriors through a marsh behind enemy lines. In 1648–1667 Smila was a company town of the Chyhyryn Regiment, Colonel Danylo Vyhovskyi owned it in 1658–1659, and in 1742 the Lubomirski princes built a wooden castle here. From 1838 the town belonged to the Bobrynskyi counts, who founded a sugar factory; by 1879 nine Smila plants outproduced 76 factories in Kyiv. The Fastiv–Znamianka railway arrived in 1876, and the town was liberated on 29 January 1944.
Natives include zoologist Leonid Portenko (1896–1972), opera singer Klara Brun (1876–1959), poet Olena Zhurlyva (1898–1971), critic Fedir Matushevskyi (1869–1919) and 1972 Olympic silver medallist Leonid Lytvynenko (1949). Smila-born soldier Dmytro Dibrivnyi (1988–2014) gave his life defending Ukraine.
The town lies on the Tiasmyn River, 25 km from Cherkasy, and its Taras Shevchenko station, with a Shevchenko monument nearby, is the largest rail junction in the region. Landmarks include the Church of the Assumption (1827), the Cathedral of the Intercession (1914), the local history museum with its Bobrynskyi collection and the Count's Oak and Sofiivka oaks. An ice cream factory continues the food-industry tradition, and a statue of the girl Smila even stands in the French twin town of Bourgoin-Jallieu. Order a bouquet from anywhere in the world and we will hand it over in Smila.
