Sniatyn: from its first mention to today

The Hypatian Chronicle names Sniatyn under 1158. The town takes its name from boyar Kosniatyn Siroslavych, who served Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl. It received Magdeburg rights in 1448 and had an Armenian community from the 17th century. In 1939 Poland's gold reserve was taken out through the town.

Famous names of Sniatyn

Short-story writer Marko Cheremshyna (1874–1927) lived and worked here. Graphic artist and Shevchenko Prize laureate Vasyl Kasiian (1896–1976) was born in nearby Mykulyntsi and has a memorial complex in town. Sen Horuk, a Ukrainian Sich Riflemen leader and hero of the 1916 Battle of Lysonia, was born in Sniatyn.
