A short history of Sokyriany

The written history of Sokyriany begins on 27 March 1604, when a charter of the Moldavian ruler Ieremia Movil? named the settlement Sekurintsi. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Principality of Moldavia, and the Moldovan form of its name, Sekuriany, remained in use until 1944. From 1770 Sokyriany was a trading centre; in 1859 it had 2,434 residents and a Sunday market. Limestone quarrying under the town began in 1955, and a memorial stele for the 420th anniversary of the first mention was unveiled in the centre on 27 March 2024.

People linked to Sokyriany

Woodcarver Ivan Savchenko (1916–1996), mathematician Hersh Gleizer (1904–1967) and physicist Petro Horlei (born 1945) were born here, and painter Oles Semernia (1936–2012) lived in the town. It is also linked to activist and volunteer soldier Andrii Babinskyi (1991–2023), founder of the Megamarch in Vyshyvankas movement.

Sokyriany today

The town lies in the valley of the Sokyrianka River, a right tributary of the Dniester, 138 km from Chernivtsi. Beneath it runs a network of limestone quarry catacombs about 500 km long. The town flag, crossed yellow axes on blue, recalls the legend of settlers who came with axes, and a border crossing to Moldova operates here.
