Sosnytsia: a settlement with chronicle history

Sosnytsia is first mentioned in the Hypatian Chronicle under 1234, when Danylo of Halych freed it among other towns. Archaeologists found settlements here from the Neolithic to Kyivan Rus, and the local ancient pottery is known as Sosnytsia ware. In 1648–1649 and 1663–1668 it was a regimental centre, later a company town of the Chernihiv Regiment. It received its own coat of arms in 1782 and became a county centre in 1797.

Notable people of Sosnytsia

Sosnytsia's most famous native is writer and film director Oleksandr Dovzhenko (1894–1956), a classic of world cinema. Baritone singer Marko Poltoratskyi (1729–1795) and physician and historian Opanas Shafonskyi (1740–1811), one of the founders of epidemiology, were also born here.

Sosnytsia today

The settlement lies on the Ubid River near the confluence of the Desna and the Seim, 88 km by road from Chernihiv. Its highlights are the Dovzhenko Literary Memorial Museum, recreated as described in The Enchanted Desna, the Vynohradskyi Local History Museum and a bear-on-a-pine sculpture (2017) based on the coat of arms.
